THE KALARI

                         The traditional Kalari at East fort was established by Sri CV Govindan kutty Nair Gurukkal in the year 1952. The Kalari functioned in a traditional thatched roof building till 1973 and the present building was completed with help from Kerala government and a model Kalarippayat training centre was established and inaugurated in 1975. The architect and designer of the building is the well known painter Sri. M V Devan.
The Kalari offers year round training program in Kalarippayat and has classes 2 times a day for local students in the age group of 9 to 18 years. The Kalari also offers short term courses of 3 to 6 months for foreign students and students from other parts of India and is also an approved centre for international scholarships through ICCR, Govt.of India for a duration of 1 to 2 years.

                       The CVN Kalari, Trivandrum is a traditional Kuzhikalari which is built about 5 feet below ground level with a dimension of approx. 35 feet by 17.5 Feet and 17.5 feet height. We have facilities to train about 20 students each session and the admissions to the courses are offered 2 times an year once in June every year with the beginning of monsoon and once in October on the‘Vidyarambham’ day.
                         We have facilities to organize small demonstration of Kalarippayat for a group of a maximum of 25 visitors inside the Kalari. At least 14 days advance notice is required to organize such a performance. We also organize workshops and lecture demonstrations of northern style Kalarippayat for interested groups or organizations inside the Kalari or at an outside venue. Please mail us for details of our present engagements, availability, duration of the workshops costs and other details. Small group of visitors who are interested to watch daily training inside the Kalari is permitted to watch daily practice of the students from the visitor’s gallery from 7 AM to 8.30 AM. Photography is allowed only with permission.
